How to Use AI Detectors Responsibly

AI detectors are screening tools. Used well, they help you decide where to look more closely. Used badly, they turn statistical guesses into accusations. This guide is for anyone who evaluates other people's writing — teachers, editors, content managers, reviewers — and wants to use detection tools without being unfair to the humans on the other end.

The one rule that matters most

Never treat a detector score as proof. Every detector produces false positives — human writing flagged as AI — and false negatives. A score is a probability estimate from a statistical model, not an observation of what happened. That means no grade, publication decision, hiring decision, or disciplinary action should ever rest on a detector result alone.

A sensible workflow

  1. Use the score to prioritize, not to judge. A high score tells you which pieces deserve a closer human look first. That is all it tells you.
  2. Look at the actual signals. Tools that show their work — sentence uniformity, vocabulary predictability, transition-word density — let you evaluate whether the "AI-like" pattern has an innocent explanation, such as a rigid required format.
  3. Corroborate with independent evidence. Draft history, revision timestamps, consistency with the writer's previous work, and their ability to discuss the content are all stronger evidence than any score.
  4. Talk to the writer before concluding anything. A conversation resolves most cases faster and more fairly than any tool.
  5. Document your process. If a decision is ever questioned, "one tool said 78%" is not a defensible basis; a documented review that weighed several kinds of evidence is.

Know where detectors are weakest

Be extra cautious — or skip detection entirely — when the text is short, heavily formatted, written in a second language, or produced in a genre that is formulaic by design. These are the conditions where detector accuracy degrades most, and where false accusations cluster.

Be transparent about using detection

If you screen submissions with a detector, say so up front. Students, freelancers, and applicants deserve to know how their work is evaluated, and stating a clear policy on acceptable AI assistance prevents most disputes before they start. Ambiguity — "AI use is bad, undefined, and secretly checked" — produces conflict; a written policy produces clarity.
